Stimulating Curiosity & Fostering Critical Thinking in Elementary (K-5)
At Berkeley Hall School, our Elementary School program for grades K-5 offers a dynamic and engaging curriculum that nurtures a love of learning and inspires critical thinking. We seamlessly integrate essential subjects—reading, writing, social studies, math, science, art, music, drama, physical education, Innovation Lab (robotics, programming, technology), and library sciences—to spark curiosity and cultivate thoughtful problem-solvers.
Inspiring Thoughtful Expression
From expository and opinion essays to narrative writing, students begin honing their writing skills as early as first grade. Quality literature forms the foundation for interdisciplinary projects, encouraging students to think independently and develop unique perspectives through analysis and synthesis of diverse ideas and information.
Balancing Analysis and Creativity
Our approach emphasizes the balance between analytical and creative thinking. Using the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP) and the hands-on Math-in-Focus program rooted in Singapore Math principles, students engage in Socratic discussions, reflective assessments, and goal-oriented progress tracking to foster deeper understanding and continuous improvement.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Field trips extend learning to exciting destinations such as the Santa Barbara Mission, Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Riley’s Farm, Getty Museum, Lincoln Shrine Museum, Skirball Center, Disney Concert Hall, and Griffith Park Observatory. Our renowned outdoor education program for 5th graders further enriches the learning experience by connecting students to the natural world and fostering teamwork, leadership, and resilience.
